Back in 1994 I was hired to work for a professional staffing firm called RJS Associates, Inc. I found I really enjoyed connecting good people to good jobs. I became an active producer for the firm right away and was even named “Rookie of the Year.”
What happened next?
In 2000, Richard J. Stewart, the President of RJS Associates, Inc. asked me to develop a new division of RJS Associates in Stamford, CT. After a lot of success with this endeavor I purchased this division with my partner and co-worker Matt Arnold, and we formed the current Smith Arnold Partners.
Are you well known in your field?
I am fortunate to have received a lot of positive feedback from numerous executives at Fortune 100 organizations as well as from leaders of entrepreneurial start-ups. I feel that the key measure of our success has been the loyalty of the many clients we serve.
Why would someone looking for a job find you different from other recruiters?
My primary concern is the well-being of the candidate. After many years of working with people I truly understand and respect what a big decision it is to change jobs. The first step is to assess each person’s current situation. Sometimes your reason to change jobs can be addressed with a career counseling session or a conversation with your current management team. I would always recommend an internal solution before recommending people look externally.
Why do your clients work with you?
I've asked that question of my clients many times, and they repeatedly tell me that my candidates are better qualified and serious about a possible change and that we provide them with more qualified and interested candidates from which to choose. They also say that Smith Arnold candidates are more likely to accept their offers than candidates from other recruitment firms. I attribute that to the extensive advance preparation.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Of course I’d like to see substantial growth at Smith Arnold Partners over the next five years, in order to be able to serve a more demanding workforce. But I temper that by saying that I don’t want there to be so much growth that we can’t continue to provide personal service. I feel that the key to our success is being very hands-on with each of our clients and candidates, and I don’t ever want to sacrifice that for growth.
Anything personal you want to share?
I’m a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and live in Weston, CT with my wife, son and daughter.
